Totnes Castle, Devon

One of the best preserved Motte and Bailey Castle's in England  was built by a Breton, Juhel of Totnes,  who was one of William the Conqueror's lieutenants. The feudal barony of Totnes was granted to him soon after the conquest in 1068. The stone of fortification was added later.
